Choose a Walking Aid by Support Need
Start with the weight-bearing instruction from a clinician or physiotherapist, then compare upper-body strength, balance, home space, and folding needs.
Underarm crutches
Suitable for prescribed unloading of an affected leg, provided the user has enough upper-body strength, balance, and correct fitting.
View optionsFoldable crutches
Easier for transport and storage, but hinges, locks, ferrules, and height settings still require regular checks.
View optionsWalking frame
Provides a broader two-hand base for people who need more stability and can walk according to clinical instructions.

A walking aid must match weight-bearing restrictions, height, grip, and balance. The lightest or most portable option is not automatically the safest.

Crutch and Walking-frame Fit and Home-safety Guide
Confirm weight-bearing status
Non-weight-bearing, partial-weight-bearing, and weight-bearing walking patterns differ. Follow the method taught by the clinician or physiotherapist and do not change loading or switch aids simply because the leg feels better.
Correct height and hand loading
Incorrect height can affect posture, balance, and arm effort. With underarm crutches, body weight should be supported through the hands and arms rather than the armpits. All walking-frame legs must be set to the same height.
Prepare the home route
Remove loose rugs, cables, and clutter, keep floors dry and routes well lit, and use a stable chair with arms. Do not pull on a walking frame to stand; approach and turn safely before reaching back to sit.
Stairs and outdoor surfaces
Stair technique should be demonstrated by a therapist, with assistance and a suitable handrail until the user is confident. Inspect ferrules, adjustment holes, locks, and tubing, and avoid wet, uneven, or unsuitable surfaces.
Before Renting a Walking Aid
- Confirm the prescribed weight-bearing status and walking pattern.
- Fit the aid to the user's height, handle position, and elbow posture.
- Check grip, balance, and the ability to sit and stand safely.
- Remove rugs, cables, and slippery or uneven hazards.
- Inspect ferrules, locks, adjustment holes, and tubing for wear.
- Obtain physiotherapist instruction before using stairs.

Crutch and Walking-aid Rental FAQ
Are crutches or a walking frame safer?
It depends on weight-bearing limits, upper-body strength, and balance. A frame provides a broader base while crutches are more maneuverable; the appropriate aid should be recommended individually.
Can I adjust crutch height myself?
Use the height set for the individual. Incorrect adjustment affects posture and safety; if it feels wrong or has moved, have the fit rechecked rather than changing it casually.
Can a walking frame be used on stairs?
A standard walking frame is generally not intended for stairs. A physiotherapist should assess another method and the home arrangement rather than the user attempting stairs with the frame.
Are foldable crutches better for travel?
They are easier to store, but still must match height and loading needs. After unfolding, confirm every lock is fully engaged and inspect the ferrules and joints.
