Underarm Crutch Height, Hand Loading, and Stair Safety
Load through the hands
The crutch top should not press tightly into the armpit. Load should pass through the handles and arms to avoid nerve pressure, with height and grip set professionally.
Follow weight-bearing instructions
Different weight-bearing restrictions require different gait patterns. Do not increase loading or speed simply because pain has improved.
Inspect ferrules and folding locks
Before use, check ferrules, tubing, adjustment holes, and locks. Stair technique should first be demonstrated by a physiotherapist.
Underarm Crutch Checklist
- Confirm loading restriction and gait.
- Set height and handles.
- Inspect ferrules, tubing, and locks.
- Remove home trip hazards.
Underarm Crutch FAQ
Should the crutch top support the armpit?
Do not bear body weight through the armpit; use the handles and arms and maintain the fitted clearance.
Are foldable crutches less stable?
They can be suitable when correctly fitted and fully locked, but hinges and locks must be checked after every unfolding.
